Five-year prison sentence for Bollywood star Salman Khan charged with poaching
The actor had illegally slaughtered animals belonging to protected species. Indian justice took twenty years to judge the case.
Poaching in the prison. Salman Khan, superstar of Bollywood, the Indian film industry, was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison and 10,000 rupees fine.
He was previously convicted on Thursday of illegally killing protected animals.
The case dates back to twenty years. Salman Khan, 52, one of India’s most prominent actors, was sentenced by a Rajasthan state court for hunting rare antelopes in 1998.
The Indian judicial system is very slow, hence the delay since the events. “Salman Khan was sentenced under the Wildlife Protection Act,” said prosecutor Mahipal Bishnoi.
Bleached in 2015 after a fatal accident
The BBC recalls that poaching occurred during a film shoot in Rajasthan.
Salman Khan was cleared in three other poaching incidents that occurred at the time of this shoot. Four other actors present in this film have been acquitted.
Salman Khan has already dealt with justice. In 2015, he was acquitted of the death of a homeless person in 2002 in a traffic accident.
After a conviction at first instance, the courts did not finally establish, on appeal, that the actor was driving, which is more intoxicated, the vehicle in question.
