How A Selfie Safe This Model Life
Martha Dolak is 31 years old. Is a model. He lives in London . For 18 months she lived with her boyfriend, Michael Goodwin , a year younger than her. It was not a love story. It was more than a nightmare . And he saved his life by miracle. Thanks to a selfie. But a brutal one .
As often happens in these cases of violence against women, at first the relationship was one more. He showed himself as someone loving. But over time, something changed. And what must have been a fairy tale turned into something sinister.
Increasingly violent, those closest to Dolak knew that something bad was happening with her. Until in October of 2017 the breaking point came. A WhatsApp message sent by a friend to the model was read by Goodwin . He became angry. The comment was forceful and urged the permanently harassed woman to leave her violent partner .
That day, in addition to beating her savagely, the man kidnapped her in her home, not letting her out for 21 hours. ” When was the message went pale. I panicked and tried to take my stuff and get out of there , ” he recalled Dolak the British newspaper The Sun . But he did not succeed: “He told me I could not leave and locked both doors .”
Witnesses of the screams and laments were the two sons that the violent man had of a previous marriage.
The violence multiplied. She wanted to escape through a window, but Goodwin took her from behind and kicked her in the head until she was unconscious. ” It was a very agonizing pain,” he said. Of course: the terrible blow of her boyfriend had caused a skull fracture, permanent damage to an optic nerve and cerebral hemorrhage .
He woke up hours later in a gloomy state. He knew something was wrong with her and decided, desperately, to do something. There was little that could be achieved under these conditions. He picked up his cell phone, saw through his camera the terror it reflected and thought: “I’ll send this selfie .” That made.
The image showed the dramatic moment he went through. ” I could not lift my head, I could not open one of my eyes and my face felt thick with dried blood ,” he said.
The friend who received the image was horrified. He immediately forwarded it to the model’s parents who telephoned the police and filed a formal complaint. Accompanied by officers, they showed up at Goodwin’s house .
Upon learning that the woman had launched her photo on WhatsApp, Goodwin begged her to say that she had not been beaten, but that she had fallen down the stairs. It was too late, the police already knocked on his door. And Dolak told the truth . The nightmare in detail, like someone who just wakes up from a deep and horrendous dream .
The selfie not only served to save his life and put an end to the abuses. But also as proof. The police presented her before a judge in London who sentenced the violent boyfriend to four years and three months in prison.
